1. What is a theme?

Pluto and Charon will probably show many different kinds of surface features. We will almost certainly see craters, but we don't know what else. Mountains and chasms? Probably. Active volcanoes? Maybe. Geologists have names for many different kinds of surface features; you can read about them at the International Astronomical Union's Planetary Nomenclature site.

Later, we will assign a "naming theme" to each kind of feature that we find. For example, we might name craters on Charon after places in the Underworld. However, we won't decide which themes go with which kinds of features until we see Pluto and Charon up close.
